Makaya McCraven - Deciphering The Message (LP)

For his new remix album “Deciphering The Message”, Chicago-based drummer and producer Makaya McCraven dug deep into the archives of legendary jazz label Blue Note Records. In doing so, he gives classics by Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, Kenny Burrell and Eddie Gale a modern, fresh sound. Although the album combines songs from different eras of Blue Note history, it feels like a cohesive set that feels like it was played live in one place. As McCraven is known for his collaborative approach, “Deciphering The Message” also features newly recorded elements from outstanding musicians such as vibraphonist Joel Ross, trumpeter Marquis Hill, alto saxophonist Greg Ward, guitarists Matt Gold and Jeff Parker, bassist Junius Paul and De'Sean Jones on tenor saxophone and flute. An album that celebrates jazz history and at the same time sounds absolutely contemporary - a real masterpiece!
