“Ayo Ke Disco” (translated from Malay and Indonesian: ‘Let's go to the disco’) celebrates the musical identities that emerged in the newly independent countries of Southeast Asia in the 1970s and 80s. Alice Whittington, Managing Director of Soundway Records and known as DJ Norsicaa, has selected 10 deep cuts from local labels, which are now being officially reissued on vinyl for the first time. The compilation is a snapshot of the vibrant disco and live scenes in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong and the Philippines. The featured artists explored traditional sounds, combining them with funk, disco, city pop and even political psych-rock - genres that characterized the spirit of this exciting but often turbulent era. Despite the instability of the post-war period, the region experienced an unprecedented economic boom. This music scene was full of hope and played a central role in shaping the region's new identities. An outstanding sampler!
