Although the term "soul" appeared in U.S. popular music as early as the 1930s, soul as an independent genre did not emerge until the 1950s from gospel and rhythm'n'blues, plus a pinch each of blues and jazz. Soon after, soul was to become the epitome of "black pop music. 

Emotionally colored singing skills are characteristic of the African-American-influenced light music. Devoting oneself to the vibes, the groove and the message with all one's soul and heartrending vocals - that's what soul is all about.
